Spring also means the annual spring meeting of the Center Lakes Association is right around the corner and 2018 CLA memberships are due. Your membership dues are crucial in helping to protect our lakes and allows the association to maximize the amount of weed spraying on North and South Center Lake. Simply visit www.centerlakes.org/join to sign up. As always, you can also join in person at the spring meeting. • Ice Out Cleanup This Weekend

It won't be long and the ice houses will be off the lake and the sound of loon calls will echo across the lake! But before that happens, there is an important event taking place that you may not be aware of. Each year a group of vounteers spend a few hours cleaning up trash left behind from all the winter activites held on the lake. While most users of the lake do their best to pick up trash, there is inevietably a lot of trash left behind. Trash that is not picked up could end up on the bottom of the lake or your shore line. Would you please consider offering a couple hours of your time on either Saturday or Sunday this weekend? Crews will be working both North and South Center from 10-12 and 2-4 on Saturday and Sunday. Crews will meet at the North Center boat landing and the South Center boat landing. Garbage bags will be provided so just show up and we'll divide the areas of the lake out from there. If you have an ATV, UTV or snowmobile, please feel free to bring it. You can sign up here to let us know if you're coming. We'll take all the help we can get! If the slots are full in the time you're available to help, please just show up anyway. Lake Life is Great When We all Particapte! Sign up Here!

  • South Center Lake research station is deployed

By Ann Wilkinson, University of Minnesota, St. Anthony Falls Laboratory Chris Ellis, St Anthony Falls Lab, works to bring the research station online after the anchors have been set in South Center Lake, MN The harmful algal bloom (HAB) team from the University of Minnesota, St. Anthony Falls lab deployed our long-term HAB monitoring research station on South Center Lake, MN on Thursday, May 11, 2017, with help from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency. This monitoring effort, led by Miki Hondzo, is funded by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative‐Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR). The research station will be continuously monitoring lake and weather conditions from May through October 2017, from its anchored location on South Center Lake. The purpose of the research station is to understand environmental triggers for HAB in Minnesota lakes. To do that, we will be monitoring vertical and temporal variability of blue-green algae concentrations, as well as water chemistry and meteorological conditions at high frequency. The research station is uniquely equipped to collect full depth profiles of the lake (14m) every two hours and can run autonomously. The data collected from the research station can be accessed remotely so we can respond to bloom events in addition to long-term monitoring. We will also be on the lake on a weekly basis to collect water samples for phytoplankton composition, nutrients and toxin quantification. This research will help us predict, where, when and why HAB form and produce toxins to help protect wildlife, recreation and drinking water in and around Minnesota lakes. A similar study using our research station was conducted on Madison Lake last summer. For more info, please visit the University of Minnesota Extension #Bluegreenalgae #SouthCenter #UniversityofMinnesota
